What is cost leadership?
Cost leadership is the competitive strategy of becoming the lowest-cost producer in a market, then converting that into either the lowest price or the fattest margin. It rests on structural advantages — scale, automation, cheaper distribution — not on discounting, which anyone can copy.
Only one player in a market can truly hold this position, and racing an incumbent to the bottom is usually fatal for smaller companies. The practical use of the concept is defensive: track competitors’ pricing over time, understand whose cost structure lets them go lower, and choose differentiation where you cannot win on cost.
