What is direct competitors?
Direct competitors are companies selling a similar product, to the same customers, for the same need — the names that appear next to yours on a buyer’s shortlist and in “vs” searches. They are the rivals your battlecards, comparison pages, and win-loss analysis are about.
The useful definition is empirical, not taxonomic: your direct competitors are whoever your prospects actually evaluate against you, which you learn from deals, not from market maps. That set is smaller than most teams assume — typically three to five names — and it shifts as competitors reposition, which is why it deserves ongoing monitoring rather than an annual refresh.
