What is mystery shopping?
Mystery shopping is evaluating a company’s sales and service experience by going through it as an ordinary customer: signing up for the trial, sitting through the demo, reading the onboarding emails, testing support response times. Retail invented it for auditing their own stores; in competitive intelligence it is the standard way to learn what a rival’s public pages won’t tell you — actual quotes, discounting behavior, objection handling.
Ethics and legality hinge on honesty about material facts: signing up for a public trial with a real identity is fair game, while posing as a fake enterprise buyer to extract a confidential roadmap crosses the line. The best programs are boringly systematic — same script, every major competitor, twice a year — so the comparison is apples to apples.
