What is SWOT analysis?

A SWOT analysis is a framework that maps a company — yours or a competitor’s — across four quadrants: strengths and weaknesses (internal factors) and opportunities and threats (external ones). It forces a balanced view: what you do well, where you are exposed, what market shifts you could exploit, and what could hurt you.

In competitive intelligence, SWOTs are most useful when run on competitors: a rival’s weaknesses are your talking points and their strengths are your product gaps. The classic failure mode is writing one once and filing it away — a SWOT built on live competitor data stays honest; one built on last year’s impressions just confirms them.
