What is white space analysis?

White space analysis is the search for the parts of a market no one currently serves: unmet needs, ignored segments, missing price points, or feature territory every competitor has skipped. It is gap analysis inverted — instead of asking “where are we behind rivals,” it asks “where is nobody playing, and why?”

The method is to map the market’s offerings on the dimensions buyers care about and look for empty cells. The crucial follow-up question is whether a space is white because it’s unnoticed or because it’s unprofitable — incumbents avoid some territory for good reason. Competitor roadmap and positioning signals help tell the difference before you commit.
