How to track mentions of a competitor
Read where a competitor (or your own product) is talked about on Hacker News and Reddit, filter by sentiment and intent, and get alerted on the mentions that matter.
The Mentions tab shows where a competitor is being talked about online: Hacker News stories and comments, and Reddit threads. Brand monitoring is included on every paid plan and is not part of the free trial; on a trial the tab shows what you will get and a link to the plans. Every mention is read by AI for whether it is really about that product, the sentiment toward it, and what the author was doing (praising, complaining, asking, comparing, or looking for an alternative). Your own product gets the same tab.
Open a competitor’s mentions
- Go to Competitors and open the competitor.
- In the sidebar, under Marketing, click Mentions.
- The strip under the title shows the search terms being watched. They come from the competitor’s name and domain, so there is nothing to configure.
Filter the mentions
- Click a channel chip (Hacker News or Reddit) to see one source.
- Click a sentiment chip (Positive, Negative, Neutral) to narrow further.
- Click an intent chip (for example Comparison or Alternative seeking) to see the mentions that carry buying intent.
- Click an active chip again to remove that filter. Filters combine, and the pager keeps them.
Refresh the mentions
- Click Refresh at the top right of the tab.
- Wait a minute, then reload for Hacker News. Reddit searches are queued and land within a couple of hours. Both channels are also swept every day on their own.
Get alerted
Mentions produce these entries in the activity feed and, when they are alerts, in Slack and the weekly digest:
- New mentions (daily batch): shown in the feed and on the tab, never pushed to Slack.
- Looking for an alternative: someone publicly asking for a replacement for the competitor.
- Trending on Hacker News: a thread about the competitor that passed 50 points or 20 comments.
- Compared with your product: a thread that names both the competitor and your product. Only your workspace sees it.
- Negative mention of your product: a negative mention on your own product’s tab. Only your workspace sees it.
To receive mention alerts in Slack, enable the Mentions angle on your Slack channel.
